Jessamine County Public Library Mary Todd: A New American Musical

In honor of the 200th birthday of Mary Todd Lincoln, The Bluegrass Opera Music and Theater Company is proud to present Mary Todd: A New American Musical. This story follows the future First Lady as she struggles to navigate the world of the American South as a teenager during the 1830s. From a complicated relationship with her cold stepmother and well-meaning father to her warm and adventurous relationship with central Kentucky's African American community, and from bright dances at her finishing school to odd apothecary shops, Mary is never a traditional "young lady," but she does discover the varied colors and tones of womanhood. BGO is a non-profit performing arts company based in Lexington. Founded in 2008, the group is a unique collective of music and theater artists that specializes in bringing new works to life -- from musicals to operas and everything in between. This will be a shortened version of the theater piece (under an hour in length). It is geared toward adults, but appropriate for students in 4th grade & up. No registration is required.
