Discovery Saturday + Family Workshops

Discover something new at Discovery Saturdays. Included with $4 admission… Marksbury Discovery Exhibit | Catching the Wind: the Nature + Science of Flight Art Galleries | Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen Maker’s Space | Spooky Chemical Reactions: Make ghosts fly and zombie pumpkins spit up. Play with mysterious oobleck and create your very own color changing slime to take home. Planetarium | 11am: Earth, Moon, Sun 12:15pm + 1:15pm: Losing the Dark and Seasonal Stargazing (included with admission) Add and AM or PM workshop… These workshops are designed to be enjoyed together with friends and family of all ages. The fourth Saturday of every month, a 90 minute AM and PM workshop will focus on topics such as comic drawing, trying you hand at the pottery wheel and much more. Workshops are led by our teaching artists or science educators and offer a great introduction to the LASC or a unique way entertain family and friends. Drop-ins welcome if space allows. Come early or stay late for a planetarium show and take in our art exhibits to complete the day. AM Workshop | Live Music Composition with Dakota Smith | REGISTER HERE Experiment with a variety of digital music samplers and drum machines. The whole family will have fun learning the basics of music sampling to create your own songs! Learn to build layers of sound in a fun, easy way. No prior experience necessary. Limit 10 teams/families. Bring a flash drive to take your creations home. PM Workshop | Art from the Heart: a FREE Workshop and FREE Discovery Saturday Admission for 5th – 12th graders | REGISTER HERE Student artists from 5th to 12th grade are invited to join us in this FREE workshop. Studies show that children’s artwork inspires, uplifts and encourages healing for children and family members who are experiencing health issues. Copies of artwork created in this workshop (you keep the originals) will be framed and hung in the patient exam rooms of Louisville’s Novak Center for Children’s Health. S

Dia de los Meurtos/Day of the Dead Festival

Community Event

On November 1, the “Night of the Angels”, the Living Arts & Science Center will present the 12th annual Day of the Dead Festival with a celebration at the Living Arts & Science Center as well as at the Old Episcopal Burying Ground at the corner of E. 3rd Street and Elm Tree Lane. This event is a fun, participatory experience for the entire family. The Day of the Dead Festival is a true community event bringing together individuals, groups, students and teachers from the Latino and non-Latino communities. Join the celebration and experience the rich visual, musical, dance and culinary traditions of this holiday that is celebrated in Mexico and parts of Central and South America. The Festival will include live music and dance performances, traditional food, hands-on crafts, art exhibits and a gallery talk by the artists, a candlelight parade, and an exhibition of altars in the Old Episcopal Burying Ground Traditional Mexican dance performed by various Lexington dance companies. A variety of hands-on crafts typical of Day of the Dead celebrations will take place indoors and out including activities such as decorating Sugar Skulls ($2 fee), dancing catrinas, tin ornaments and traditional headdresses. Contribute to a community altar by bringing a memory from someone close to you. Day of the Dead Exhibition The LASC’s annual Day of the Dead exhibits brings together the rich visual traditions of this holiday that celebrates the memories of family, friends and other public figures. Presented in conjunction with our Day of the Dead Festival, these exhibits generally feature artists of Latino heritage or artists that make work in response to the Mexican celebration Dia de los Muertos and a Community Schools Art Project. Traditional food from area restaurants will be available for purchase at the LASC. The LASC will also serve complimentary pan de muertos, the traditional bread of the dead.

Planetarium Pop-Up: Cosmic Colors

Film

The Living Arts & Science Center has LIMITED RUN of a popular planetarium show and is offering it this week for just $4 admission. This show may not be shown at the LASC again, so take this opportunity to discover something new about your world in the LASC Planetarium. COSMIC COLORS Cosmic Colors will take you on a wondrous journey across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Discover the many reasons for color—like why the sky is blue and why Mars is red. Take a tour within a plant leaf and journey inside the human eye. Investigate x-rays by voyaging to a monstrous black hole and then back at your doctor’s office. You will even see the actual color of a dinosaur–based on recent evidence. Get ready for an amazing adventure under a rainbow of cosmic light!

Planetarium Pop-Up: Seasons of Light

For the Family

The Living Arts & Science Center has LIMITED RUN of this popular planetarium show and is offering it for just $4 admission. This show may not be shown at the LASC again, so take this opportunity to discover something new about your world in the LASC Planetarium. SEASON OF LIGHT Season of Light explores the reasons humans are so fascinated with lighting up our lives during the December holiday season. It’s an exploration of the astronomical meanings behind seasonal traditions, including the “Star over Bethlehem”. Season of Light is a specialty program with an emphasis on astronomical and cultural themes related to the holiday season. Its educational impact is achieved through a set of multidisciplinary ideas woven throughout the program that help relate different holiday traditions and astronomy to the lives of students, families, and the general public. Narrated by National Public Radio’s Noah Adams.

LexPhil PB&J Concert: Music Builds Math!
